Review of Holy Rollers (2010) by John M — 27 Feb 2011
Jessie Eisenberg plays a Jewish 20-year-old virgin seduced into a life of drugs. I liked Eisenberg's quiet but natural performance; you can tell the actor identifies with the character of Sam who's smart but naive.
Filmed lazily by director Kevin Asch, the picture has no energy and the scenes feel limp. Justin Bartha is fine as the "devil" who seduces Eisenberg but the picture could have given more background to his character. The other interesting character is Rachel played by Ari Graynor but her motivation is not clear. It's one of those movies "inspired by true events" which makes you wonder how much of a free license did the filmmakers take.
