Review of Half Nelson (1985) by Lee B — 28 Jan 2011
Half Nelson carries a deeply emotional story, but it never overshadows the film by trying to reinstate that fact. It's a subtle film that guides us through school troubles, while avoiding all the cliches you'd expect.
The writing is definitive for the story and on the back of it, there are some strong performances, namely from the talented Ryan Gosling who portrays the main protagonist through his self-destructive nature.
Half Nelson could be identified as a drug movie or even just a school film, but it's simpler than that. It's a story of salvation.
