Review of Gun Hill Road (2011) by Elaine L — 20 Aug 2011
Reading some of the reviews from the critics with "gender cliche" statements, and "tenderness and good intentions don't necessarily add up to a good movie"---I scratch my head and wonder, did we see the same movie? Because this movie was rather brilliant.
It was sensitive, and at the same time, brutally honest and incredibly uncomfortable at times. Growing up in a latin family, and with the uber-macho culture that latin families tend to embrace, this film is incredibly accurate of what that environment can be be like.
What I enjoyed most is even though a part of you wants to hate the father figure role of the film (which Esai plays to perfection), you understand his character at the same time. This is a very well executed film.
I recommend it to anyone and everyone.
