Review of Great Expectations (2012) by Mark R — 04 Jan 2014
An interesting adaption of my second favourite Dickens story, but ultimately suffers from comparisons to not only the David Lean classic, but the recent BBC TV adaption.
That being said the ending is far closer to the original intention than the Lean version, which is sadly let down by a pat Hollywood ending.
Helena Bonham Carter's Miss Havisham is a sad portrait of loss, delusion and pity. Whilst Raph Fiennes gives a savage and fatherly take on Abel Magwitch.
All in all a valiant attempt to bring to the big screen, but fails to add anything new to the proceedings to set it out as a classic.
