Review of Grande école (2004) by Giffy G — 30 May 2008
While I was definitely disappointed by the lack of an ending, I liked that this movie didn't try to simplify things: racism was confusing and hard to sort out, homophobia was confusing and hard to identify, misogyny was laid bare but coupled with respect, and attraction was dissected under a high-powered microscope.
I wish, though, that the characters had been characters and not types, and that the ending, while not necessarily resolving everything (I'm a fan of Hanif Kureishi and his similarly-themed movies NEVER have resolution), but I wish there had been a moment I could point to and say, "AH, that's the ending.
" I know I'll be thinking about this movie for years to come, which is why I gave it such a high rating for a movie I wasn't entirely fond of.
