Review of Goon (2012) by Aron R — 14 Jan 2013
What I really admire about this film is its joke delivery: Goon is super fast to get to the funny moments, and before you know it, it's over; it does not dwell on its jokes. The humor reaches its peak, keeps you laughing, and then BOOM, it's moved on. The filmmakers basically said "fuck it, let's be funny, let's be brutal, let's make a great fuckin film.".
Most importantly, however, is how great of a protagonist was written. Goon features quite possibly the most lovable protagonist (in the very real Doug Glatt) in the history of Cinema. Seriously. You can't not love this guy.
Sean William Scott does his best work here, and Jay Baruchel is funnier than usual, alongside good performances from Alison Pill (whom I love) and Marc-Andre Grondin.
My only slight gripe was that just like many of the jokes that reached their high then suddenly ended, so did the film. Still great shit though.
