Review of Goodbye Solo (2009) by Kristen D — 07 May 2009
The title of this film is important to me because it's the only thing that isn't said - and the only thing Bahrani probably didn't spend 12 hours trying to get perfect. It's one of those things that just works out because of the movie gods- by accident and without a lot of thought. When asked, Bahrani seemed to reply that someone recommended that it sounded better because it couldn't just be called "solo" and it looked better on screen. For me, this film is about everything that isn't said, and in those moments the relinquishing of yourself as a human being to things and people and aspects of life that you fight against (and try to fix)- but to no avail - and among all that realizing it's not worth the fight - things ARE... and all that encompasses has its own inexplicable and ever-ineffable beauty (for lack of the better word I'm admitting doesn't exist).
