Review of Gie (2005) by Valiant T — 02 Sep 2007
I really have mixed feelings about this film. First of all, it has a very good material to start with, but Riri Riza seem to try too hard in aiming the movie for a younger audience. Personally, I don't like the overly commercial cast.
The movie is also overly narrated. The narration seems to take on a huge role in explaining the plot. I tend to appreciate movies that is slightly more open for interpretation than this.
Despite its drawbacks, I still enjoyed the movie. It's definitely an improvement when compared to other pop Indonesian films. It has a strong motivational message to the young generation, and brave in its attempt to re-tell the history post-soeharto regime.
Along the lines of Soe Hok Gie own's spirit, this movie both bold and brave in its story telling, especially in a country with harsh politic climate like Indonesia.
