Review of Ghosts of Cité Soleil (2006) by Sarah C — 16 Jun 2008
I didn't really know what to make of this and admittedly my own lack of knowledge about the situation in Haiti didn't really help, given that prior knowledge seems to be assumed.
I couldn't relate to the two main protagonists, I hate the kind of macho posturing they embodied, and couldn't really work out whether they had any genuine interest in the well-being of the people around them, beneath the gangsta talk. Were they leaders or warlords? Pass.
As for the French relief worker, I was baffled by her personal involvement with them and found her behaviour totally unprofessional and inappropriate.
Overall this documentary was pretty incoherent and depressing but seemed to stay true to the ethos of presenting an impartial view of a situation.
A confused three stars for opening my mind to world events and putting Haiti firmly at the bottom of my list of holiday destinations.
