Review of Gandhi, My Father (2007) by Randeep B — 10 Sep 2007
The story of Gandhi's eldest son, the prodigal one, was a subject that could have been brilliantly executed on celluloid as a reflection on the myriad shades of Gandhi the politician and Gandhi the father. Instead, it looks like a film where commendable acting saves a terribly underused structure in the film's execution. Any matter that concerns Gandhi inevitably raises eyebrows, but the film was shoddy in its making and fails to raise the sensitiveness with which the relationship between father and son truly was. And far too modern for the period - a fancy lampshade in a bare room, a full blown colour picture of Gulab Gandhi ... these are not easily overlooked. Akshaye Khanna does well as the lost, prodigal son who cannot find his feet and cannot openly berate his father for his misery because he is the father of a nation.
Such a good topic but such a waste of talent.
