Review of Flesh and the Devil (1926) by Madeline M — 02 Mar 2008
A completely enjoyable, if completely melodramatic, Garbo film. It's also a very good example of homoeroticism in early Hollywood movies, which was an unexpected bonus. The chemistry is excellent between all the characters; most famously Garbo and Gilbert, but also (as mentioned) Gilbert and Hanson.
Gilbert and Garbo have a distinct lack of chemistry which is just right for their part. However, as seductive as Garbo is, she isn't convincingly establish as a "veil" over Hanson's eyes.
The film is beautifully made, however. Very much worth checking out.
