Review of First Position (2011) by Lanre O — 16 Aug 2012
While this film seemed short, there was a lot to enjoy about it. The way the lives of each character intersect one another gives a brilliant portrayal of the difficulties they face on the way to reaching their goals.
I think this film addresses a lot of the misconceptions that people have about dancers - i.e. the amount of training, the costs, the injuries, the setbacks, and the triumphs of a short-lived profession.
As one who enjoys dance as a hobby, I can very much appreciate the amount of work these kids put in to follow their passions. The sad thing is that not everyone gets their chance to shine. Nonetheless, I enjoyed how this documentary was organized and I think many could learn a lot from watching it.
