Review of Double Indemnity (1973) by David R — 24 Dec 2008
Cliche as it is to mention, no one writes like this anymore. And it's a shame, too, because the implied sexuality in this sort of work is far sexier than almost any of the hyperedited sweaty gropings of today.
Even if you anticipate one of the twists (and you will), there are others lying in wait. The fun is mostly in the execution: A thick stew of all sorts of noir goodness -- snappy repartee, dry humor, latticed lighting, suspicious investigators, moody narration, a murder plot that simultaneously manages to be smart and stupid, and Barbara Stanwyck in a bathrobe.
