Review of Digging Up the Marrow (2015) by Malikah B — 15 Mar 2016
Genre masterbation at its most gratuitous. Green has always been a fanboy at heart and 'Digging up the Marrow' is prime example of a man in love with his craft. At time, Green's humour overtakes the intrigue, there's only so far you can take this without totally losing me to surrealism.
Much like the 'Hatchet' series, 'Marrow' is a biting genre film, interesting, self-aware. It's failures being to show when these Green tropes begin to wear thin. There's nothing scary here, what's any attempt at horror is cheap, telegraphed and empty.
'Digging up the Marrow' is a smart script by smart people who somehow forgot they were trying to make a smart horror movie.
