Review of Dangerous Liaisons (2012) by Timothy A — 17 Feb 2016
Is this the best version of this story ever told? Tough call, but possibly yes. It wouldn't exist without its forebears, there's a couple of moments shamelessly pulled from the Stephen Frears version, the treatment of the Cecile character owes more than a little to Cruel Intentions, and the references to the politics of the new setting feel somewhat tacked on.
Nonetheless, it's one of the most sumptuous films ever made in terms of design, and if it leads you in with your eyes, the script does the whole thing justice. Cecelia Cheung absolutely marvels in taking on a role that's been done by Jeanne Moreau, Annette Bening and Glenn Close and making it her own tour de force so that you don't know whether to cheer or run screaming.
