Review of Crazy Horse (2011) by Mike M — 01 Nov 2011
A lesser film from this director, in part because it defaults on the one thing Wiseman's always been good for (a sense of the geography and ambience of a place, not just its lighting choices), in part because it raises yet again a regular criticism of Wiseman's work as an observer of individuals.
We're no closer to the film's human subjects at the end of "Crazy Horse" than we were at the beginning, which is newly problematic in this context, because the camera starts to reduce the dancers, in particular, to a series of gyrating behinds.
The film is at once revealing and not revealing enough.
