Review of Countdown to Zero (2010) by Damon Y — 21 Mar 2011
Like so many of the documentaries I've watched recently this is let down by a poor conclusion. The majority of this film is excellent, looking at the history of the nuclear bomb and examining the ways in which these weapons could be triggered either by accident or foul play.
Then at the end the filmmaker seems to decide that we need to come up with a solution and it just doesn't add up. The idea is for all countries to just get rid of weapons...this is just too simplistic, you've just spent an hour and a half telling us how easy it would be for terrorist organisations to create a bomb with the material to hand.
There is no real discussion of the bomb as a deterrent in itself and no examination of the rights and wrongs of the West trying to decide who should and shouldn't be allowed to build these weapons.
A missfire (boom boom!) ultimately then but as a history film it does make excellent viewing.
