Review of Cobra Verde (1987) by Chris W — 10 Aug 2012
Cobra Verde is definitely not one of Herzog's best films, but it's far from one of his worst. A crazy main character played by Klaus Kinski is a pretty normal thing for Herzog, and it works well here mostly thanks to a telling scene towards the end as he writes himself a letter of reflection, which really gives him a human side.
Overall, the film suffers a bit from lack of cohesion. When I found myself interested in a direction the film was taking, a shift would seemingly always occur. Regardless, quality outdoor cinematography, some great human emotion, and a good performance by Kinski makes this a strong film.
