Review of City of Gold (2016) by Wendy M — 14 Mar 2016
Looking for a feel-good documentary? City of Gold features Los Angeles journalist Jonathan Gold who has made a career out of reviewing meals at the city's myriad small eateries. And given that L.A.
is home to such a wide variety of nationalities, his choice of where to eat is endless. Recipient of the first Pulitzer prize for food writing, he says he's one of those lucky people with a dream job.
After a positive Gold review, the fortunes of a modest establishment skyrockets overnight. And in spite of trying to stay anonymous, his presence is sometimes exposed, triggering mild panic in the kitchen.
As the story unfolds, we see Gold's mission has become more than food critic. He's singing the praises of his hometown's unique cultural mosaic. Gold's neighborhood Los Angeles is refreshingly different from the glitz we're usually shown on screen and in the tabloids.
