Review of Chop Shop (2008) by Mohamed H — 22 Dec 2008
Chop shop lets us see a side of New York rarely seen on any movie. with an amazing performance from 12 year old Alejandro Polanco about taking on adult responsibilities in the junkyard chop shops in New York.
the movie is shot in such a way that it doesn't even look like it is set in New York because of the junkyard backdrop. only until the shot of the stadium is shown do we realize the movie is being set in New York.
this proves the cinematography is excellent to bring us into a world within another world giving us a culture shock that a third world country exist right in New York. overall the movie is touching and depressing at the same time seeing how he has to survive as an orphan with his sister in this horrifying truth that a place so foreign exists even in the most modern city of the world that people struggle everyday just to get by.
