Review of Chimes at Midnight (1965) by Michael S — 15 Oct 2007
Everyone says Citizen Kane is the greatest movie of all time. Well, as great as it undoubtedly is, I prefer Welles' later masterpiece Chimes at Midnight. This towering achievement, shot on a shoestring in Spain and Italy and starring an incredible international cast, amalgamizes no less than FIVE Shakespeare plays AND features the greatest battle scene in all of cinema (the Battle of Shrewsbury), a mind-blowing piece of extended montage editing.
