Review of Chandni Chowk to China (2009) by Vicky P — 09 Apr 2009
Many critics and snobs lampoon it but if you see it as a playful tribute to Hong Kong movies it's actually perfect in its imperfection. It's choke full of references from Kung Fu Hustle (which pisses off both the kung fu aficinados and those who hate the East pandering to the West), to Drunken Master, The Bund, From Beijing with Love, Curse of the Golden Flower, and Kung Fu Panda, etc.
It's even got the contrived plots (and plot-holes) often found in Hong Kong movies in the dubbing era, such as the long lost twin sisters, one of whom raised by the archenemy of their father. It's a fun ride, and it's a nod, no, a bobblehead to many of the wonderful as well as silly things of HK cinema.
And for that, I love this film. But even without that, I enjoy the pure entertainment that it surely did not fail to offer.
