Review of Cabaret (1972) by Luke G — 26 May 2012
Being a teenager who has seen a lot of musicals and movies, I can honestly say that Liza Minnelli is an amazing actress and is, in my opinion, one of the best singers of all time. That set aside, Cabaret is VERY different from the stage production.
The stage production had different names and, all together, a different plot. However, this movie truly captured the essence of what the musical is about. This eight time academy award winning film flamboyantly portrays Minnelli as Sally Bowles in an Academy Award winning performance.
Furthermore the tony award winning Joel Grey delivers an Academy Award winning performance as the Master of Ceremonies for which he originated the role on Broadway. This movie, in my opinion, is one of the best adaptions of a musical to film, which is very difficult to do.
