Review of Bullet Ballet (1998) by Matt G — 19 Jul 2011
"In your dreams you can kill anyone and get away with it. Tokyo is one big dream. A dream.".
The above quote hones in on the central themes and tone of this violent Japanese crime noir nightmare. The cinematography is the contrasty and visceral b&w of Pi meets WKW's handheld dreamy aesthetic of Fallen Angels or Chungking Express. Matched with Tsukamoto's signature industrial intensity (communicated effectively through sound design and soundtrack), it's a fairly evocative experiment (much more pleasant to watch than Tsukamoto's unbearable Tetsuo).
