Review of Bugsy (1991) by Benjamin N — 17 Feb 2008
You can literally count on one hand the number of movies Warren Beatty has made in the past twenty years. The man likes to take his time, which can be particularly frustrating since he's usually capable of greatness whenever he actually gets around to making a movie.
This is one of his better later-career films, a gangster film that avoids the cliches of the genre and actually works better as a character study than a shoot-em-up action picture. (Only three people are killed in this film, and one killing occurs offscreen).
He and Bening have smoldering chemistry together (no surprise, since they fell in love during shooting and would eventually marry) and the solid supporting work of Keitel and Kingsley are major assets as well.
The type of film that makes me wish Beatty worked more frequently.
