Review of Bug (2002) by Vincent A — 09 Sep 2008
For a little-known horror movie, this is enormously effective. Based on a stage play (which makes sense given that 98% of the movie takes place in Judd's tiny motel room), the fascination of the film is in watching these characters interact.
The downward spiral that they take is just mesmerizing. The greatest credit to the film is that I didn't know where it was going to go. Very unpredictable. Perhaps even better was that once the narrative begins to steer down a certain path, by that point I'm so invested in the characters and the path that THEY believe that even when the film shows me CLEAR evidence that the characters are wrong, I WANT to believe them.
Despite how ridiculous their perceptions are, I buy into them because I buy into the characters.
