Review of Breathless (2009) by Cassandra L — 06 Sep 2008
It at first seems kind of difficult to watch this outside of the oh-my-gosh-it's-so-historically-important mindset it comes packaged in because of the pressure, but it didn't take long to win me over on its own merit.
I actually thought its most innovative aspects (fourth-wall breaking, handheld camera, jump cuts, etc.) were the least interesting things about it. Belmondo brings his morally ambiguous but almost ridiculously cool antihero to life, and Jean Seberg is fantastic as his love interest.
The two share the film's best scene, a 25-minute bedroom conversation about absolutely nothing whatsoever. That's the genius of this film: it takes what sounds boring and makes it beautiful and interesting.
