Review of Blue Like Jazz (2012) by Evan S — 23 Apr 2012
Having read the book, I was excited to see the adaptation. And to be clear to fans of the book, this is a very loose adaptation. However, the themes of the book run through the movie in such a way that you will be pleasantly surprised.
While some may consider it to be "avoiding thorny issues", it actually tackles the thorniest of all spiritual issues: doubt. It is upon this singular issue that people of all faiths must place so much.
After all, it's called faith - not fact - for a reason. If you are a person of faith, or have struggled with issues of faith in the past, I feel confident that you will at least find grist for the mill in this film.
No firm answers, for sure, but definitely something to chew on.
