Review of Black Book (2006) by David S — 09 Sep 2009
A moving and thrilling film that concentrates on the Resistance and Nazis through the eyes of a jewish woman in 1944. It grips simply because of the excellent performances (especially from Carice van Houten and Sebastian Koch), the amazing cinematography and the fact that neither side is shown in simple black and white.
Perhaps a little overlong this film grips from the beginning. The most surprising thing is that it is directed by Paul Verhoeven, the man who brought us Basic Instinct and (shudder) Showgirls. This has a maturity about it that suggests that he is happy to be away from the banality of Hollywood.
