Review of Big Bang Love, Juvenile A (2006) by Peter H — 09 Mar 2008
Somewhat of a surreal spiritual brother to Gozu, Big Bang Love finds Miike fixated on pensive, dreamlike sequences rather than gangster dramas and schlock horror. It also seems to draw visually on the more art house tendencies of Seijun Suzuki and Lars Von Trier.
It's not without its humor, but BBL is one of those rare installments where Miike actually seems to take his art seriously. If you want another Ichi the Killer or Audition, don't bother seeing this; if your appreciation of Miike extends to Gozu, The Bird People of China and Dead or Alive 2, then this is worth your attention.
