Review of Beneath Hill 60 (2010) by John G — 07 Jun 2010
Depicting efforts of Aussie tunnelers in their cat and mouse war against their German counterparts, 30 metres below the mud of Flanders 1916-17. The darkness and claustrophobia of the tunnels seems quite a refuge when contrasted with the chaos, mud, violence and horror on the surface.
The film was chaptered with a series of flashbacks to a peaceful Queensland covering Oliver Woodwards' enlistment - plus budding romance. I thought this parallel story provided both contrast and a welcome relief to the horrors of the western front.
The film builds tension right up to the stunning climax, the blowing of Messines Ridge June 1917.
