Review of Becket (1964) by Roy P — 30 Jun 2007
A bit long and dry, but highly compelling as drama, this film relies mostly on its two lead performances--but they are excellent ones. Peter O'Toole as the boisterous, hotheaded Henry II, and Richard Burton as his conscientious aide, Thomas a Becket, both give among the best performances of their careers.
The film's talkiness can be wearying, but it's well rewarding for those who make the time investment; it raises the important question: should one show allegiance first to God or to one's friends and family?
