Review of Ballast (2008) by Jake R — 17 Feb 2010
A cold movie, with the occasional oasis of human connection, Ballast takes you to a place where people aren't close to one another and most grieving takes place in utter silence. Hammer treats his characters with a candid respect that allows their few words and subtle body language to speak volumes.
He clearly has faith in his audience, too, filling each frame with thematically rich imagery but never breaking the realism to explain it away. It's really one of those rare gems that states very little, but communicates a lot.
And the ending is just perfect.
