Review of Amistad (1997) by Evan W — 06 Jan 2008
When I read the back of the box, to see what Oscars this film had received nominations for, I was shocked and terribly disappointed to see that the only nominations were for things like editing and sound.
... Not that those weren't well done, but the film itself, had it been released more recently, would have been a shoe in for a best pic nod. It is easily one of the most powerful films I have ever seen.
But, it is never too much, and is always conducted in that typical "accessible" Spielberg way. The acting is top notch and close to flawless. The story doesn't seem to rush, it is a long movie, but for most of it, you hardly realize you are watching a film.
And the music is fantastic. A film whose story and cumulative power is immense and unforgettable.
