Review of Ajami (2009) by Mike B — 22 Mar 2010
Manipulative flow is the standout feature of this movie. The director purposefully tempts the viewer to obvious conslusions by repeatedly presenting half-truths and partial perspectives, which are later demonstrated to be innacurate at best and categorically false at worst by peeling back additional layers at choice times.
While it is hard to imagine how such a relevant lesson could be better woven into the movie, choppy transitions made it available to only the most determined viewer. The film's chapter structure felt like an afterthought that had been subsequently grafted on top of the plot to make the application of editing slight-of-hand easier.
