160812: I purchased the "Double Feature" disc containing this film because of Sounder (1972). What a surprise when the B-side turned out to be nearly as good as the A. A Dog of Flanders is a wonderful story about a poor, parentless Dutch boy who desires to be an artist.
Much like Sounder, I'll bet this film would absolutely torment younger viewers but for anyone of mature mind, it's pure class on all levels.
