Review of A Day Without a Mexican (2004) by Jonathan A — 14 Apr 2009
One-joke mockumentary/satire about a phenomenon in California where the entire Latin American or "Mexican" population mysteriously vanishes, causing pandemonium when no one is available to do manual labor for minimal wage and the only Latina left is a sexy reporter.
Starts off interesting, but the premise extends what would have been adequate for an SNL skit into nearly two hours with many subplots that lead practically nowhere. While I admire the filmmakers' attempt at discussing themes regarding illegal immigration, xenophobia, and Hispanic stereotypes, the translation to film unfortunately ended up feeling a little cheap and stale for my tastes.
