Review of 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance (1995) by John M — 07 Jan 2009
You are told the ending the movie the very first frame, but when you reach the conclusion, it still knocks you off your feet. It's exactly what the title says it is, it's 71 fragments of a loosely connected story, with scenes ranging from a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes.
You meet a number of characters, and it makes your brain work as if it were solving a puzzle, trying to figure out where the crossroad is going to be for all these people to interconnect. Haneke makes another statement here about violence in the media, and this one I feel has the most clarity and effectiveness.
Haneke has this way of filming that makes you dread the upcoming moments, anticipating something awful. Then the atrocity happens, and you still weren't ready for it.
