Review of Zelig (1983) by Willem W — 19 Jul 2007
An inspired work of technical mastery. Woody Allen and DP Gordon Willis create a seamless fake documentary about Leonard Zelig, a 'chameleon man', so insecure he physically changes to match whatever company he is in.
It's also a touching love story and filled with belly laughs. It's easy to make fun of Woody Allen, or dismiss him because his newer films don't hit this level, but for a good 25 years, he's been the most consistently innovative and intelligent American Filmmakers around.
As much as I love Scorses, Coppola, Speilberg, Altman, et al, Woody tops them all. IF you haven't seen a Woody Allen film before, start with this one.
