Review of Young Törless (1966) by Courtney S — 24 May 2008
Examination of how people engage in and allow cruelty to happen. Beautifully shot, penetrating and heartbreaking. All these young men and the terrible things they are capable of doing - applicable to Nazism, soldiering, prison abuse, etc.
The black-and-white photography makes the film's beauty clash with its harsh subject matter. Plus, Barbara Steele makes a supremely odd appearance as an insightful prostitute.
