Review of Yield to the Night (1956) by Elaine J — 28 Jan 2009
British Classic of the 50s, loosely based on the Ruth Ellis case, J Lee Thompson's film is a worthy, anti-capital punishment statement. The film jumps between Dors in prison and her looking back through a series of flashbacks to reveal the events that led to her crime.
Bleak, dramatic and even heart breaking, this movie, more than any other, confirmed Dors' status as an actress of merit. Whilst the film was sold on Dors's sex appeal, for the most part, she is stripped of all but a little make-up and she gives an incredible performance, showing a talent and range that make this stand out from anything else she ever did.
