Review of Woman on the Beach (2006) by Private U — 20 Aug 2008
This is the most stripped down of his films, insofar as premises go. Hong's own vulnerability, despite the protagonist being a film director, never shows. In a way, this reminds us that one can be reflexive without being so darn intrusive.
He doesn't walk us through the process of churning out a screenplay, per se, nor about everything else. Rather, its intersections are shown without those obnoxious epiphanic moments where everything then makes sense in a clear-cut way.
