Review of When We Leave (2010) by Doug B — 19 Jul 2011
Powerful story, with excellent acting. Umay leaves her abusive husband in Turkey with her preschool-aged son and seeks refuge with her family in Berlin, where they are torn between their love for her and their firm adherence to the cultural belief that she is her husband's "property.
" Although she is resilient and determined to chart her own life, her vulnerability as she yearns for family acceptance is heartbreaking. The opening sequence hints at the tragic ending, but even with this clue the conclusion will take your breath away.
