Review of West Is West (2010) by Susan B — 05 Mar 2011
This is a much gentler film than East is East that explores issues of home, family, duty and identity. It begins poorly, the Jimi Mistry cameo is cringy and a bit pointless, but once the action moves to Pakistan the film gets richer and more interesting.
It's a coming of age film for the young Sajid as well as his father George (Jahangir) - coming to realise what he's done in leaving his Pakistani wife and daughters for Ella in England.
The acting is superb and the scene of the two wives meeting is one of the most powerful I've seen in a long time.
You'll laugh, you'll cry - totally life affirming!
