Review of West Beirut (1998) by Sarra M — 25 Aug 2007
This film offers a gripping look at the calamity of the Lebanese Civil War. Although starting with humourous scenes in the chaos of vibrant Beirut, the film ultimately leaves one with a chilling sense of hopelessness by the end.
The young characters in this film shine brightly despite their miserable circumstances, never fully realising the magnitude of their situation. This film is a remarkable piece of Lebanese cinema, interweaving fragments of archive footage from the 15 year long war.
