Review of Welcome to New York (2014) by Mathieu W — 19 Apr 2015
Abel Ferrara actually made a truly good film -- and no one is really able to see it. In the past his films sometimes hit moments of brilliance but are usually ruined by his bombastic and sadistic measures.
This film is the exception and his first interesting film since Bad Lieutenant. Welcome to New York is not really so much about the infamous trial of Dominique Strauss-Kahn as it is about the ever growing power of money over any since of ethics/morals.
Never mind justice. Basset is great, but this is Depardieu's first great role in years -- and he plays it brilliantly. Sundance Selects is currently renting it via iTunes. It is well worth the rental.
