Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by Tom R — 22 Sep 2009
Bloody hell, what a film. Harrowing, beautiful, and tragic, all at the same time. An animated piece of fiction that documents the personal fallout from a real-life tragedy.
A filmmaker tries to recover his own lost memories of his experiences as a soldier in the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. In so doing, he uncovers the hidden history of the Shabra and Shatila massacre of Palestinian refugees by Phalangist Christians, in the fallout of President-elect Bashir's assassination.
The movie is amazing. Its views on the effects that a person's memories can have over the rest of their lives is stunning and powerful, in a very nauseating way.
