Review of Vital (2004) by Morgan O — 07 Mar 2008
A haunting and surprisingly tender exploration of love, loss, and fetishism.
Less abstract than 'Tetsuo...', 'Vital' has a heartfelt narrative that is genuinely beautiful.
Whilst being in colour, 'Vital' still benefits from the stark, monochromatic nature of both Shinya Tsukamoto's palette and methods of story-telling. The man must surely be considered an auteur by now, not least because of the recurring themes and colours which dominate his work.
I think Tsukamoto is up there with Kenneth Anger, Werner Fassbinder and David Cronenberg in terms of exploding the ways in which we think about ourselves and our bodily desires.
