Review of Vera Cruz (1954) by John D — 18 Oct 2007
A precursor to the violent, amoral cynicism of Leone and Peckinpah, Robert Aldrich's "Vera Cruz" is a very atypical '50s Hollywood Western. Burt Lancaster is cast against type as a psychotic mercenary concerned only about gold, and Gary Cooper is a slightly more honorable ex-Confederate who comes along for gold but ends up doing the "right thing".
Full of double-crosses and scheming, with no one able to trust any other character, and some of the best shootouts/action scenes in Western history. Cesar Romero, Morris Ankrum, Jack Elam, Ernest Borgnine, and Charles Buckinsky (you know who I mean) can be seen among the supporting cast.
