Review of Valmont (1989) by Carla P — 27 Jun 2008
Another adaptation of the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and a well done one at that. I was a long time fan of Dangerous Liaisons when I finally saw this version, and I was surprised by how good it was.
Colin Firth is a sexy bastard, and I was shocked - shocked I tell you! - at how well Annette Benning pulled off Merteuile. At first I was a little put off by Meg Tilly as Tourvel - I mean, she is decidedly plain as compared to Michelle Pfieffer.
But she certainly pulled off a different kind of vulnerability and heartbreak - it was a GREAT performance. And finally, I love Fairuza Balk. It was cool seeing her in such an innocent role for a change (I haven't seen everythig she's done, but most of what I have seen has her playing roles with some kind of darkness attached), and she did it SO well.
And even Henry Thomas played a convincing Danceny, despite the fact that he will always be Elliot from ET to me, no matter how old he gets.
